The key to effective online learning: a good blend of self-paced content and live workshops
Within our partnership with UNIZO, we support various entities with the organisation of their online and hybrid events. Most recently, we organised an online learning day for UNIZO Onderwijs & Ondernemen, for example. The aim of this event was to inform and inspire teachers about the use of certain digital tools to improve and digitalize teaching methods. This was achieved through several pre-recorded videos combined with a wide range of live workshops. Continue reading to find out what factors contributed to the success of this event.
The collaboration with Thola went very smoothly. Sofie, our assigned Project Manager, thinks along and gives options that are within budget. In addition, support and feedback is also given during and after the event which ensured that everything went according to plan. In short, our participants had an instructive day in an accessible way. We look forward to our next collaboration.

Parallel live workshops
In terms of content, the focus during this online learning event centred on the live workshops organised over two evenings. Participants could choose from several workshops that took place simultaneously. To inform participants correctly and in time, a detailed agenda was made available in the lobby where you could see in an instant which session was given when and by whom. Each workshop dealt with a specific tool, which was explained in a hands-on way by an expert in this subject area.
By organising these workshops live via MS Teams, there was low-threshold interaction between the expert and participants, making it easy for questions to be asked and answered immediately. Fun fact: the speakers themselves provided the Teams Meeting links, giving them full control over the meeting options such as adding a lobby for the participants, etc.
Easy accessible content
Besides the live workshops, there was also a lot of other information available during this online learning event. On the one hand, participants could watch plenty of pre-recorded videos. These videos contained many practical tips & tricks on specific topics that teachers could immediately start working with. Think for example about the use of book widgets, online storytelling, online conversation management, etc.
Teachers could also find some useful websites in the lobby. The participants could consult all this content at their own pace. The advantage of this is that they decide which content is relevant and when they wish to view it. After this online learning event ended, the platform remained available for another 7 days so that the teachers could revisit all the content and workshops.
Re-use of UNIZO designs
Finally, we would like to draw attention to the design used for this online learning event. In order to proceed in the most efficient and cost-friendly way, the client chose to reuse a large part of the already existing UNIZO design. This design was previously created by the designers at Once Storytelling for the “Dag van de Digitale Ondernemening” event earlier this year.
The look and feel of this design was completely maintained. Only structural changes were made such as adjusting the number of doors and changing the text in the buttons and video screens. As mentioned above, a calendar was also designed in line with the style of the design. This solution ensured that the client still had a unique environment adapted to the needs of the event in a budget-friendly way.
